Silver Strike Concrete supplied approximately 12,000 cubic yards of concrete for the Mathewson Gateway Project – John Tulloch Business Building in Reno, Nevada, working with McClone Construction on one of the region's most significant recent university developments.
Located at the University of Nevada, Reno, the five-story project represents an important physical and economic connection between the university and downtown Reno. Developed through a public-private partnership, the Mathewson Gateway development expands the university campus toward the downtown corridor while creating a new home for the College of Business.
The project required a range of specialized concrete solutions. Silver Strike supplied high-performance concrete designed to achieve early strength and an ultimate strength of 8,000 PSI, along with lightweight concrete for portions of the five-story structure. High-early-strength concrete supported the demanding construction schedule by allowing work to progress efficiently as the building moved vertically.
Sustainability was also an important component of the project. Low-carbon concrete was incorporated to help reduce Environmental Product Declaration values and support the building's sustainability objectives. The completed building achieved LEED Gold Certification, demonstrating the project's emphasis on both high structural performance and reduced environmental impact.
The Mathewson Gateway Project has received significant industry recognition, including the National P3 Award for Best Education and Higher Education Project, the AGC Nevada Pinnacle Excellence Award, and an American Concrete Institute Award in the Mid-Rise Structures category.
