After years of planning, engineering, and construction, the Mosquito Road Bridge Project in El Dorado County is approaching completion, marking a major milestone for one of California’s most complex infrastructure projects.

Designed to replace the original one-lane suspension bridge built in 1939, the new structure will improve safety, emergency access, and traffic flow for residents and visitors traveling between Placerville and the communities surrounding the South Fork American River Gorge. The project also provides a more resilient transportation corridor for emergency responders and evacuation efforts during wildfire events.

The scale of the bridge is impressive. Stretching approximately 1,200 feet across the canyon and rising hundreds of feet above the river below, the structure features two massive piers exceeding 230 feet in height and dozens of cast-in-place cantilever segments that extend outward from the bridge supports. The project required specialized construction techniques due to the challenging terrain and remote location. The bridge was constructed using a balanced cantilever method, allowing crews to build outward from the piers rather than relying on traditional falsework in the canyon below.

For Folsom Ready Mix and Silver Strike Concrete, the Mosquito Road Bridge project has represented a unique opportunity to support a landmark infrastructure project that will serve the region for generations.

The project has progressed through several major phases over the past few years. Early construction focused on deep foundations, large footing pours, and the construction of the bridge’s towering support piers. As work advanced, crews transitioned into vertical construction and eventually began deck pours that brought the two sides of the bridge closer together.

Supplying concrete to a project of this magnitude requires far more than simply delivering material to a jobsite. Remote canyon construction presents significant logistical challenges, including difficult access routes, demanding schedules, and the need for consistent, high-performance concrete mixes capable of meeting strict engineering specifications. Shimmick Construction contracted with Folsom Ready Mix / Silver Strike Concrete to provide concrete supply on the south side of the project, while additional batching operations supported construction activities in other areas of the canyon.

Throughout the project, Folsom Ready Mix and Silver Strike Concrete have worked alongside contractors, engineers, and project partners to help keep construction moving forward. From foundation work and structural elements to later stages of construction, the project has demonstrated the importance of quality control, reliable delivery, and close coordination among every member of the construction team.

As the bridge nears completion, it stands as a testament to modern engineering and the collaborative effort required to deliver infrastructure in some of California’s most challenging environments. We are proud to have played a role in supporting a project that will improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity for the region for decades to come.

Projects like Mosquito Road Bridge are a reminder that behind every major piece of infrastructure is a network of contractors, suppliers, engineers, and construction professionals working together to turn ambitious plans into reality.
