Silver Strike Concrete is proud to announce that we have received the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Award in the Mid-Rise Structures (4–15 Stories) category for our work on the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) Mathewson Gateway Project. The award was presented on behalf of the company by Patrick Carey, who represented Silver Strike and the project team during the ceremony and whose leadership on the Mathewson project was instrumental in driving performance standards and construction coordination
This recognition highlights the technical expertise, structural performance, and collaborative precision that supported the successful completion of a complex, multi-story academic facility. We are honored to see the UNR Mathewson Gateway project recognized among the industry’s leading structural achievements.
A New Front Door to the University of Nevada, Reno
Designed to create a modern gateway between campus and downtown Reno, the Mathewson Gateway building is a five-story, 128,000-square-foot facility dedicated to business education. The structure delivers state-of-the-art learning environments, including:
- A 300-seat auditorium
- Advanced technology labs
- Optimized study and teaching spaces
- Student commons
- Faculty and administrative offices
This new academic facility serves as a modern anchor for the university, blending architectural design, innovation, and high-performance construction to support a new generation of business students.
Silver Strike Concrete supplied 9,300 cubic yards of specialized concrete, including critical material for the building’s core wall, which required 8,000-PSI high-performance concrete capable of reaching 3,000 PSI within just three days. Lightweight concrete systems were also used for elevated floor construction, supporting both structural objectives and long-term building performance.
Sustainability was a core priority, incorporating:
- 40% supplementary cementitious materials
- Environmental Product Declarations
- LEED Gold certification objectives
The materials and delivery strategy emphasized durability, strength, and environmental responsibility while supporting a complex schedule.
Team Collaboration That Drove Success
The Mathewson Gateway project was a true collaborative effort involving multiple partners from across the industry. The initiative was led by Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate and the University of Nevada, Reno, with architectural design by LMN Architects and structural engineering by Magnusson Klemencic Associates. Clark Construction served as the general contractor, while McClone Construction managed the concrete contracting. Silver Strike Concrete supplied the concrete materials, supported by Associated Concrete Pumping for all pumping operations. Together, these organizations worked in concert to deliver a complex, multi-story academic facility on schedule for the Fall 2025 semester—a testament to coordinated planning, precise execution, and a shared commitment to quality construction.
Silver Strike Concrete continues to expand its footprint in Northern Nevada. Following Folsom Ready Mix’s expansion into the Reno-Sparks region in 2020 and the acquisition of P&L Concrete Products in 2023, the installation of a second Silver Strike batch plant in Sparks in 2025 further enhanced the company’s ability to support large-scale commercial and institutional construction.
This growth, paired with regional industry partnerships, positions Silver Strike Concrete to continue delivering high-demand, high-complexity concrete solutions throughout the region.
We are honored to be recognized by ACI and even more honored to contribute to a landmark campus project that will serve students, the Reno community, and the future of business education. Congratulations to every partner involved and to the team at Silver Strike for continuing to set the bar for innovation, performance, and excellence in concrete delivery.
